Raoul Wallenberg Day is January 17th

Raoul Wallenberg (Aug. 4, 1912 - Jul. 17, 1947?) was a Swedish humantarian who worked in Budapest, Hungary during World War II to save Jews from the Holocaust. Between July and December 1944, he issued protective passports and housed Jews in buildings established as Swedish territory, saving tens of thousands of lives. Canada declared Raoul Wallenberg its first honorary citizen in 1985. It was in 2001 that Canada proclaimed January 17th as Raoul Wallenberg Day.

He was honoured many times by Canada and Hungary, while Israel has also designated Wallenberg one of the Righteous among the nations.

The circumstances of his death have long been in question, with some disputing whether he died while in Soviet detention.
