What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system which is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the myelin which is a protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the central nervous system.

 
 
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Facts
  • Canada is known as having the highest rate of MS in the world, at 240 cases per 100,000 people.
  • Approximately 75,000 Canadians are living with MS and half of the population knows someone with the disease.
  • The mean age of onset of symptoms is 25.
  • More than three women have the disease for every one man.

The Carnation: Symbol of a Cure
The carnation expresses love, fascination, and distinction. That is why it was selected as the official symbol of Mother’s Day. Now the carnation is the best-recognized symbol of hope in the search for a cure for multiple sclerosis.
