International Literacy Day is September 8th, 2010.

International Literacy Day was started by UNESCO and the day highlights the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies, and addresses social and economic issues that arise from low literacy levels.

Recent studies suggest that over 10 million Canadians are working at marginal levels of literacy and that many more are functionally illiterate. For more information on Canadian literacy statistics, view the Canadian Council on Learning’s prose literacy map.

Why is literacy important?
On International Literacy Day, UNESCO reminds us that: "Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowerment and a means for social and human development."

Literacy and Essential Skills
Literacy and Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning and life. The Government of Canada and other national and international agencies have identified and validated nine literacy and essential skills. These skills are used in nearly every occupation and throughout daily life in different ways and at different levels of complexity.
The nine literacy and essential skills are:
  • Reading text
  • Document use
  • Numeracy
  • Writing
  • Oral Communication
  • Working with others
  • Continuous learning
  • Thinking skills
  • Computer use
