| "All human beings are born free and
equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience
and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." |
|
| Thus begins the United Nations Declaration
of Human Rights, signed on December 10th 1948. Although this landmark document holds these principles to be self-evident, fighting for human rights has been an ongoing struggle. |

| Certain people and organizations have played a crucial role in ensuring that these fundamental human rights to live freely and with dignity are upheld. Some of these individuals are honored every year in Cote Saint Luc’s Human Rights Walkway, inaugurated in 2000, and located in Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park. | |

| On July 1, 2011 the City of Côte Saint-Luc
will unveil a plaque honouring Aung San Suu Kyi on the city’s Human
Rights Walkway. Aung San Suu Kyi has valiantly struggled for democracy and human rights in Burma for more than 20 years. Burma has been under military dictatorship since 1962. The military placed Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest in 1989, offering to free her if she agreed to leave the country. She refused and demanded the return of civilian government and the release of political prisoners. In 1990, her party, the NLD, won a landslide victory in Burma’s first multi-party elections in 30 years, but it has never been allowed to govern. |
