| Many young people have a good idea of what
bullying is because they see it every day! Bullying happens when someone
hurts, insults or scares another person on purpose and the person being
bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. Usually, bullying
happens over and over. |

| In Canada, studies suggest that roughly 6%
of students aged 12 to 19, report bullying others on a weekly basis, 8%
report that they are victims of bullying weekly, and 1% report that they
are both victimized and bully others on a weekly basis . Bullying surveys
also indicate that many more boys than girls report being victims of bullying
and almost all boys named male peers as the aggressors. |

| There is little doubt that prolonged involvement
in bullying, as a perpetrator, victim, or, not uncommonly, as both a perpetrator
and target of bullying, conveys risk for many aspects of the student’s
development. Students are most vulnerable to bullying during transitions from elementary to high school. There is a correlation between increased supervision and decreased bullying. Bullies stop when adults are around. |
