Arnold Zageris finds anything above the arctic tree-line absolutely fascinating and has been returning there for years, stimulated by the uniqueness and stark contrast.
The wild and open spaces have taught him not only to see that grander scale, but also to explore the more subtle nuances of form and texture. To capture these finer details, he uses a 4 x 5 view camera. This slow, methodical approach allows him to pay attention to content and composition. He doesn’t use filters for colour enhancement, so the final image is a true representation of what he sees.
In this series Arnold Zageris captures the rugged scenery of Labrador—with its semi-barren hills, numerous lakes and bays, exquisite fiords and majestic mountains. His explorations there have taken him as far north as the Torngat, Kaumajet and Kiglapait mountains. The collection of photographs in this series ranges from the grandeur of Lake Tasisuak down to the detail of the minerals in the ancient mountain rock or the lichen that grows on it. There is a timeless quality to these images; there is nothing that gives away that they are taken in the present day.
Arnold Zageris lives in the northern Quebec town of Rouyn-Noranda, and he specializes in large format photography with an emphasis on arctic and sub-arctic regions. Zageris has been photographing scenery in Labrador for the past 20 years, having visited the region 14 times.
His photographs have appeared in Canadian Geographic, several other publications, and are also found in numerous private and public collections. For the past 15 years, he has exhibited works in group shows across Ontario, including at the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.
On the Labrador: Photographs by Arnold Zageris is a traveling exhibition produced by the Canadian Museum of Nature in partnership with The Rooms Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
