Mirror Sky with Studies 2009 - 2011
Michael Smith

October 13 to November 20, 2011

Michael Smith

Michael Smith has an international reputation. His paintings are also found in the permanent collections of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Rideau Hall.

His major work Mirror Sky with Studies presents the various preparatory stages and collages leading to the finished version of the work.

“A large work takes several months to prepare,” Smith said. “In this exhibition, I’ve chosen just a few of the studies used in the working of the large diptych, Mirror Sky. I’ve also included in this exhibition photographs recording my process of working.”

This diptych, which refers to two paintings placed side by side, illustrates Smith’s longstanding exploration of landscape painting. He refers to images of water and woodland, and alternates between shadow and light to create unfamiliar and surprising landscapes.

Born in Derby, England in 1951, Michael Smith has lived in Montreal since 1978. He completed his Master of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in 1983. Since 1981, his paintings have been exhibited across Canada and internationally. Reviews and essays of Smith’s work have appeared in ARTnews, Modern Painters, Canadian Art and Border Crossings magazines.

His work is also on display at michaelsmithpainting.com.
