State of Transformation
Amanda Burk

July 21 to August 28, 2011

Toronto artist Amanda Burk’s series of large-scale works on paper features exquisite charcoal drawings of northern animals, represented in two almost identical mirror images. While examining ideas about symbiotic relationships, Burk adds a playful twist by naming each drawing after a famous duel.

For example, Dual (Pushkina), 2010, depicts Russia’s national animal, the bear. The image was titled after Natalya Goncharova Pushkina, wife of the famous Aleksandr Pushkin. He and his brother fought a duel over Natalya, in which Pushkin was mortally wounded.

Amanda Burk’s art practice is rooted in drawing, although she draws on everything from the usual paper to mylar to painted wooden balls. She received her MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2003 and her Honours BA Fine Arts Specialization from the University of Waterloo in 2001. Her work has recently been exhibited in Switzerland, Chicago, New Orleans, and Toronto. Currently she is an Assistant Professor at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario.
