Replay is a series of images that encourages one to re-examine the concepts of perception, reality and deconstruction. The artist’s work demonstrates how image manipulation and the process of repetition can modify the original meaning and context in which an image is presented. She questions the notions of observation, cognitive recognition and designation. Her work involves both discerning reality and deconstructing evidence. Her recent paintings and drawings deal with portraiture and attempt to undo the evidence of things. She has developed a sewing technique that requires assembling several different views into larger images. This produces a vibrating surface full of tonal and formal shifts that scramble and shatter perceptions. Sarah Bertrand-Hamel lives and works in Montreal. She holds a Bachelor in Studio Arts from Laval University (2006) and is currently completing a Master in Fine Arts at Concordia University. Her work has been exhibited in Quebec, France and Mexico, notably at the Châtel-Censoir Town Hall (France, 2006), at Joyce Yahouda Gallery (Montreal, 2008, 2009 and 2010), as well as at Occurrence and the Maison de la culture Frontenac (Montreal, 2010). Sarah Bertrand-Hamel’s works are featured in public and private collections, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto-Québec, and the Museo national de la cerámica (Mexico). |
