Summer Fun in Children's

Summer is finally spoiling us with endless hot and gorgeous sunny days. Are you looking for a place to stay cool with the kids? What better place than the library! There’s something for everyone. Browse our huge collection of children’s and young adult books or find your favorite movie from our wide array of children’s movies.

Those of you who have babies should definitely check out our Stroller Derby Pit Stop, an activity area designed for babies where parents and babysitters can come and socialize while their children romp around. We have lots of colourful, soft and inflatable toys for the little ones. Hot beverages are served and there are couches and lounge music to enjoy. What better way to spend the morning?

Our weekly story times which include singing and crafts are always a huge hit too. Also, don’t forget to stop by for our Summer Reading Club Party on August 26. There will be many activities such as pyramid building and 'lost world' games. As you can see there’s always something here for every member of the family to enjoy but the fun doesn’t stop here, this coming fall and winter we’ll have a ton of new activities for children and their families to enjoy. You can stay up to date on what’s happening in the children’s department by verifying our program brochure. Come on by!

Stay cool on the computer

Summer is a time of fun in the sun, complete with frolicking, being footloose and fancy free, away from habitual cares and worries, even if it’s only for a week or two. Perhaps sitting on a beach, by the lake or at the ocean, walking in the park or going out for ice cream may be a few ways you spend the fine days. Riding a bike, watching the clouds pass by, swimming, having a barbeque, sitting on a terrasse with friends - there are countless possibilities to use the wonderful moments well.

Mind you, during short spells of hot, hot heat and high humidity, outside is not always the place you want to be. At times it is too uncomfortable to partake in any sort of activity out of doors. Or maybe the heavy air just feels oppressive and is hardly conducive to moving about in a vigorous manner. As ever, at your favourite local library, we have the solution for you.

Nine public computers are available, by reservation over the phone or in person, for a booking of one hour per person per day. Whether you need to type a letter in French or search the Internet for some information, it is possible to do so in a cool environment and contemplate life, the universe and everything. If you are in a terrible hurry and just need to verify your e-mail on the go, stop by the Audio Visual Desk to ask for a chance to use the Express Computer. And for those with laptops, PDAs or fancy mobile phones – there is free wireless Internet available in the library from 10 in the morning to 10 at night.

It’s easy, we’re here to help

I would love it if everyone knew how easy the library really is to use. I think sometimes people feel less-than-confident when it comes to using our library tools and resources, simply because they have felt intimidated or too shy to ask in the past. I want to reach out to these people and tell them: We’re here to help…YOU!

If the people we serve don’t feel comfortable enough to ask us for help when looking for material that may be useful or interesting to them, then maybe we just haven’t made ourselves clear enough, so I would like to take this time to set things straight. The staff, at our library, enjoy serving our clientele! It brings us great joy just to be able to find that one book, to fill that one special request, to be able to help shape a non-reader into an avid one; it’s our raison d’être. I shudder to think of anyone leaving the library without having found something that they can’t wait to get into; a book, a movie, a course, anything!

If you haven’t used the library in a while, you may not even be aware of all the useful self-service options that we now have in place: online reserving and renewing, an electronic catalogue that can be browsed from home OR in the library, the Computers for Beginners program, databases and accompanying guides, and so much more. Still feel unsure of what to do or how to use the library? PLEASE ask us; we also love to answer questions and we’re happy to help.
